Semen Analysis

Semen analysis involves checking a semen sample for sperm count, sperm motility, and sperm morphology. Abnormal findings in any of these areas may indicate a fertility issue.

At Perch Fertility, our approach is thorough. We begin with a detailed medical history and physical exam, followed by diagnostic tests designed to pinpoint specific issues related to sperm production, function, or delivery. We use advanced semen analyzers to give patients the highest level of diagnostic results.

Understanding Semen Analysis

A semen analysis is one of the most important diagnostic procedures for assessing male fertility. This diagnostic tool is often the first step in understanding male fertility issues and developing a personalized care plan for conception.

Semen analysis is a laboratory test that examines the quality, quantity, and movement of sperm in a semen sample. Evaluating the health of your sperm can help identify potential causes of infertility and guide the next steps in the treatment process.

The results of this test are essential for diagnosing male infertility because it can reveal critical factors, such as:

  • Semen Volume: The volume of liquid in the sample
  • Sperm Count: The total number of sperm in the sample.
  • Sperm Motility: The ability of sperm to swim and move toward the egg for fertilization.
  • Sperm Morphology: The shape and structure of the sperm, which affects its ability to penetrate and fertilize the egg.

By analyzing these parameters, fertility specialists can assess whether your sperm has the potential to fertilize an egg naturally or if assisted reproductive technologies (ART) may be necessary.

When To Get Semen Analysis

A semen analysis is typically recommended when a couple has struggled to conceive after 12 months of unprotected intercourse. It is often the first diagnostic test performed for men as part of a fertility evaluation, especially in the following cases.

  • You and your partner are having difficulty conceiving despite regular, unprotected sex.
  • You have a history of medical conditions that may affect fertility, such as testicular trauma, varicocele, or past surgeries.
  • You have risk factors like smoking, excessive alcohol use, or exposure to environmental toxins.

In some cases, men with no apparent risk factors may still undergo a semen analysis to rule out potential underlying causes of infertility.

What to Expect with a Semen Analysis

The process for semen analysis is straightforward and minimally invasive. Here's what to expect:

  • Sample Collection: Semen is typically collected through masturbation in a private room at our clinic or in the comfort of your own home.
  • Laboratory Testing: Once collected, the semen sample is analyzed in the laboratory in real time.
  • Precaution: To ensure the most accurate results, you will typically be advised to abstain from ejaculation for 2-5 days before providing the sample.

The entire process is typically quick and provides valuable insights into male fertility within a few days.

Understanding the Results of Semen Analysis

Once the laboratory analysis is complete, the results are carefully reviewed to assess the health of the sperm.

  • Sperm Count: A normal sperm count typically ranges from 15 million to over 200 million sperm per milliliter. Low sperm count may decrease the chances of conception.
  • Sperm Motility: Normal motility means that at least 40% of sperm in the sample are actively moving. Poor motility, or slow-moving sperm, can make it difficult for sperm to reach the egg.
  • Sperm Morphology: Normal morphology refers to sperm with a healthy shape and structure. Abnormally shaped sperm may have difficulty penetrating the egg.

If the semen analysis results show abnormalities in any of these parameters, further testing or treatments may be recommended to address the underlying issues.

Hormone Testing for Male Fertility

In some cases, hormone testing may also be performed along with the semen analysis to provide a more complete understanding of your reproductive health.

Hormones like testosterone, follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and luteinizing hormone (LH) play crucial roles in sperm production. Imbalances in these hormones can directly affect fertility.

At Perch Fertility, we may combine semen analysis with hormone testing to gain a more detailed understanding of any potential fertility issues and offer more targeted treatment options.

After the Semen Analysis

If your semen analysis results show abnormalities, we may recommend one of the following as possible next steps.

  • Repeat Testing: Since sperm count and quality can fluctuate, a repeat semen analysis may be recommended to confirm initial results.
  • Treatment Options: Based on the findings, we may recommend treatments such as medications, lifestyle changes, or assisted reproductive technologies like intrauterine insemination (IUI) or in vitro fertilization (IVF).
