Fertility Hormone Evaluation & Pelvic Ultrasound

At Perch Fertility, we employ a comprehensive approach to diagnosing infertility issues, including fertility hormone evaluations and pelvic ultrasounds. Infertility is a complex issue with a wide range of potential causes.

Understanding your hormonal balance and the health of your reproductive system is a critical step in this process. Accurate diagnosis is essential for identifying the root of the problem and determining the most effective course of treatment.

Fertility hormone evaluations can identify imbalances or deficiencies that may be affecting your fertility as well as markers to assess ovarian reserve. Our goal is to empower you with knowledge and develop tailored treatment plans that maximize your chances of a successful pregnancy.

Fertility Hormone Evaluations

Hormones play a vital role in regulating reproductive health. Fertility hormone evaluation is a simple yet powerful diagnostic tool in diagnosing and treating infertility.

These tests are used by our fertility specialists to assess the levels of various hormones in your body and identify imbalances or deficiencies that may be affecting your reproductive function.

Hormone levels can affect your ovarian reserve, menstrual cycle regularity, and overall fertility potential. By assessing these hormone levels, we can better understand your reproductive health and identify potential challenges.

Fertility hormone evaluations typically involve a series of blood tests. These tests may be scheduled for specific days of your menstrual cycle to ensure that your hormone levels are assessed accurately.

Once all tests are completed, our fertility specialists analyze the results to identify any abnormalities in your hormone levels. Based on the findings, they can determine the underlying cause of infertility and recommend appropriate treatment options.

Tests to assess levels of one or more of the following hormones may be recommended.

Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH)

FSH is the hormone responsible for stimulating the growth of ovarian follicles, which contain eggs. An FSH test is usually performed on the second or third day of the menstrual cycle. Low FSH levels may indicate diminished ovarian reserve, while high levels can suggest ovarian dysfunction.

Luteinizing Hormone (LH)

LH triggers ovulation in women, i.e., the release of a mature egg from the ovary. An LH level test performed at the beginning of your menstrual cycle can diagnose hormonal imbalance that can disrupt the menstrual cycle and prevent pregnancy.

Estradiol

Estradiol is a form of estrogen, which is a hormone that regulates menstrual cycles and prepares the uterus for pregnancy. The estradiol test helps measure ovarian function and assesses the quality of your eggs.

Similar to the FSH check, this test is done on the second or third day of your menstrual cycle.

Progesterone

Progesterone is a hormone produced by the ovaries after ovulation. It helps prepare the uterus for a possible pregnancy. If there's not enough progesterone, the uterus might not be ready for an embryo to implant, increasing the chance of miscarriage.

A blood test to check progesterone levels is usually done about a week after ovulation. A low result could mean either that ovulation didn't occur or that there is a problem with the luteal phase of your menstrual cycle (just before your period starts).

Anti-Müllerian Hormone (AMH)

This blood test assesses a woman's ovarian reserve. It measures the level of Anti-Müllerian Hormone (AMH), a hormone produced by developing ovarian follicles. It can provide an estimate of the number of remaining eggs in the ovaries and help monitor changes in ovarian function over time.

This test can provide valuable information for women who are considering fertility treatments or freezing eggs.

The AMH test can be performed at any time during the menstrual cycle, as AMH levels remain relatively stable throughout the month. However, it's often recommended to schedule the test during the first half of the menstrual cycle for more accurate results.

Vitamin D Level

Vitamin D plays an important role in various bodily functions, including reproductive health. Research has suggested a potential link between vitamin D levels and fertility. Some studies suggest that adequate vitamin D levels can support ovarian function and may improve outcomes in women undergoing fertility treatments.

Vitamin D is also thought to play a role in sperm motility and overall sperm health, which could impact male fertility. If you’re considering vitamin D supplementation, it’s a good idea to consult with one of our healthcare professionals to determine the right dosage and to evaluate your specific situation.

Pelvic Ultrasound

A pelvic ultrasound is another key diagnostic procedure that helps assess the health of your reproductive organs, including the ovaries and uterus. It is a non-invasive imaging test that uses sound waves to create detailed images of the reproductive organs, including the uterus, ovaries, and fallopian tubes.

Pelvic ultrasounds are typically recommended for women who are experiencing infertility, irregular periods, pelvic pain, or other reproductive health concerns. They can also be used to monitor fertility treatments or to assess the health of a pregnancy.

What to Expect with a Pelvic Ultrasound

Prior to a pelvic ultrasound, you will be asked to empty your bladder. This helps image quality during the imaging test. You will lie down on an examination table, usually in a position similar to a pelvic exam, with your legs in stirrups.

A small, slender device called a transducer is used. It is covered with a disposable plastic sheath and coated with a gel for better transmission of sound waves.

The healthcare provider will gently insert the transducer into your vagina. You may feel some pressure, but it should not be painful. After the images are captured, the transducer will be removed.

The gel may be wiped off, and you can usually resume normal activities immediately afterward. The entire process often takes less than 5 minutes.

An alternative to transvaginal ultrasound is an abdominal ultrasound which is performed over your belly. If this is something you're interested in, please consult with your healthcare professional.

How A Pelvic Ultrasound Can Help

A pelvic ultrasound allows us to evaluate the structure of your reproductive system. It is commonly used to:

  • Evaluate ovarian reserve: Assessing the size and number of follicles in the ovaries can provide information about a woman's fertility potential.
  • Detect abnormalities: it can identify conditions such as uterine fibroids, endometriosis, ovarian cysts, or polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
  • Monitor follicular development: It can help track the growth of follicles during the menstrual cycle to assess ovulation.
  • Assess the endometrial lining: It helps evaluate the thickness of the uterine lining, which is crucial for a successful pregnancy.
  • Investigate pelvic pain or discomfort: It can help determine the underlying cause of pelvic pain or discomfort.

After the Diagnostic Tests

At Perch Fertility, we believe that understanding your fertility status is just the beginning. Once your blood test and imaging reports are ready, we take the time to review your results in detail with you. We prioritize ensuring that you fully understand your reproductive health and the options available to you.

Based on your unique profile, we develop a personalized care plan that aligns with your goals, whether you are ready to start a family now or want to preserve your fertility for the future.

Our team will guide you through the possible treatment paths, from non-invasive approaches like lifestyle changes and fertility medications to advanced options, such as Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) or In Vitro Fertilization (IVF).

For patients dealing with recurrent pregnancy loss, we offer a thorough workup to identify any underlying issues and create a plan to move forward with the best possible chance of a successful pregnancy.

Additionally, if you are not ready to pursue IVF or prefer to explore alternatives, we’ll discuss low-intervention options, such as timed intercourse and other fertility treatments designed to meet your needs.
